Baby Led Weaning

This category covers all things Baby Led Weaning (BLW). BLW is a form a feeding your baby that is different from the traditional method of feeding pureed baby foods.

To start BLW, we recommend that your child is at least 6 months of age and exhibiting signs of readiness.

Signs of readiness include:

  1. sitting up independently,
  2. absence of tongue thrust,
  3. grasping items with more hand control,
  4. putting toys to his/her mouth,
  5. demonstrating an interest in table foods.

BLW is a fear for most parents because they think the risk of choking is higher, however, research shows that the risk of choking following BLW is no higher than it is for traditional weaning.

We think the benefits greatly outweigh the risks!

Benefits of Baby Led Weaning include:

  1. less time in the kitchen,
  2. reduced spending on commercial baby food products,
  3. having a less selective, non-picky eater,
  4. a child who is confident in trying new foods and textures,
  5. having a child that is more in tune to hunger and fullness cues and less likely to overeat, and
  6. not being a short order cook.
